Spanglish and I

This past month's preoccupation has been learning "Spanish". Yes, the language. Although sometimes it seems that I'll never get beyond "Hola" or Qué hora es?

What started this latest infatuation of mine? Well, it was the movie “Spanglish”, of course!

What a nice movie! I’m glad that they’re finally making some movies that portray people who care about each other and those around them.

My son had rented it and gave it to me to watch, since he thought I might enjoy it. That, or because it’s easier to have mom return it, than going that way himself. ;-)

Anyway, I appreciated the thought, and enjoyed it for the nice comedy that it is; while I was watching it. But later, when I really thought about it, I realized how much in common my own history had with that of the mother and daughter portrayed by Paz Vega and Shelbie Bruce, respectively.

My mother had brought me to the United States, from Germany, when I was ten years old. This movie made me remember what it had felt like for us, when we first came to a foreign country and everything was new and strange.

The part that really reminded me was when mom and daughter had to walk a great distance to the bus stop. Boy, did we do a lot of walking back then! :-)

We never had a car until I graduated High School, made my license (since I’d had Driver Ed in school) and bought my first VW. When mom saw how easy it was, she went out and did the same…… after they made it possible to pass the driving test on an automatic transmission, that is. Mom never could drive a standard, even if our lives had been at stake! (lol)

She went and bought a nice big American-made car though. I think it made her feel safer than my small VW bug.

Hers was a powder blue, hardtop version of this one;

Boy, there was never a car that was cared for better than that one!

There’s a really nice review of the movie here;
